Sermon: Walking in Love
Scripture
1 John 3:16 – This is how we have come to know love: He laid down his life for us. We should also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
Summary
Today we continued in our series Prove It! We learned that we cannot separate our relationship with God from our love for other believers. If you’re a follower of Christ, you are called to walk in love toward your brothers and sisters. Scripture teaches that everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of God.
In today’s passage we saw three outcomes experienced by the Christian who is walking in love toward brothers and sisters.
Walking in love:
As we saw, at the core of these outcomes is the gospel of Jesus Christ. By his sacrifice, Jesus showed us how to love in action and truth.
In today’s passage we saw three outcomes experienced by the Christian who is walking in love toward brothers and sisters.
Walking in love:
- Leads to separation from the world. By walking in love, believers distinguish themselves from unbelievers.
- Results in a costly sacrifice. Jesus laid down His life for us, so we should follow His example as we love one another.
- Produces hopeful hearts. Walking in love results in assurance, confidence before God and answered prayer.
As we saw, at the core of these outcomes is the gospel of Jesus Christ. By his sacrifice, Jesus showed us how to love in action and truth.
Discussion
- Share some of the reasons you think people might fail to walk in love the way 1 John is calling us to?
- Share how considering Jesus’ sacrifice for us might motivate you to love other believers, even though it will cost you something?
- Share about a time when you saw and acted upon an opportunity to love a fellow Christian in need.
- Share one step you will take to walk more intentionally in love toward other Christians.
Pray Together
Father, we are reminded that as followers of Christ, we can only love because You first loved us. We thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit, Who enables us to love as You’ve called us to. Please help us to submit to the leading and empowerment of the Spirit, that we may love one another as we should. As a result, may You be glorified, as others see we are indeed followers of Christ. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
