Faith Talk - January 5, 2025

Sunday: January 5, 2025
Series: Vision 2025
Sermon: Habits of Faith

Scripture

1 Timothy 4:7-8 –  But have nothing to do with pointless and silly myths. Rather, train yourself in godliness.  For the training of the body has limited benefit, but godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

Summary

This message focused on celebrating God's work in 2024 and looking forward to His plans in 2025. The key emphasis was on developing spiritual habits that align with God's good plans for us. The church identifies five core habits for spiritual growth: Worship, Grow, Serve, Give, and Go. Rather than drifting through life, we must develop habits that move us toward God's purpose.

Key Points:
  • God is doing good works among and through us (Psalm 105:1-2)
  • God has prepared good works for us to do (Ephesians 2:10)
  • Habits toward these good works require discipline and community (1 Timothy 4:7-8)

Age-Appropriate Discussions

Homes with Adults
  • Which of the five spiritual habits (Worship, Grow, Serve, Give, Go) comes most naturally to you, and which requires more intentional effort?
  • How have you seen God's good plans unfold in your life when you've been intentional about spiritual habits?
  • What specific habit would you like to develop or strengthen in 2025, and how can our family support you?

Homes with High School Students
  • How do your daily habits affect your relationship with God and others?
  • What makes it challenging to maintain good spiritual habits, and how can you overcome those challenges?
  • Which of your current habits might be causing you to "drift" away from God's plans?

Homes with Middle School Students
  • What's one good habit you already have that helps you grow closer to God?
  • How do your friends influence your habits - both good and bad?
  • What's one new spiritual habit you'd like to start this year?

Homes with Elementary Students
  • What are some things you do every day to show God you love Him?
  • How does it feel when you make good choices instead of just doing what's easy?
  • What's your favorite way to learn about Jesus?

Pray Together

Father God, we thank You for Your faithfulness through 2024 and for the good works You've already prepared for us in 2025. Thank You for our church family and the ways You're working in our community. We ask for Your help in developing habits that draw us closer to You. Give us wisdom to recognize when we're drifting and the courage to make changes when needed. Help us support each other in growing stronger in our faith. We commit to being intentional about our spiritual habits this year. Help us to worship fully, grow consistently, serve gladly, give generously, and go boldly with Your message. Help us consistently have these sermon discussions at home by utilizing this Faith Talk. In Jesus' name, Amen.

OPTIONAL Family Activity: "Habit Helpers"

Create a simple family habit tracker for one week.

On a piece of paper or whiteboard, list 3-4 spiritual habits your family wants to develop (like worship, grow, serve, give, go, or consistent Faith Talks, or maybe more individual disciplines like daily prayer, Bible reading, sharing your faith, etc.).

Make it fun by using stickers or drawings to mark when family members have completed their habits. Celebrate together at the end of the week and discuss which habits you want to continue.

Remember: Start small and make it enjoyable! The goal is to build lasting habits together, not create pressure or stress of checking off a box.
